LA TET FESTIVAL 2009
Spring
Festival
Goal and Objective
Tet is the Vietnamese New Year that begins on the
first day of the Lunar New Year. The celebration lasts
for seven days. The Lunar New Year is one of the most
celebrated and joyful holidays through the millenniums.
It has evolved into an illustration of the traditions
and customs found in the greater part of the Asian
society. Like Chinese, Vietnamese people are very
careful about what they do on the New Year's Day. The
events on New Year's Day determine good fortune for the
rest of the year.
Tet is the time for joy and happiness to be shared
amongst all members of the extensive family, between
teachers and students, and among friends. The ritual
involves firecrackers and gongs and other festive items
that make loud noise to usher out the old and welcome
the new. Children profit from the cash in red envelopes,
the color representing joy and happiness.
For Vietnamese overseas, Tet is an opportunity to
rediscover our own culture. It is thus the
responsibility of the culture rooted Asians to organize
in a way that would involve and impact most of our
younger generations.
In the goal of preserving tradition, A Plus Education
Center, a non-profit organization, continually
celebrates one of the largest Asian-American cultural
events in the United States in 2009. With the support of
Whittier Narrows Regional Park located on Rosemead Blvd,
City of S. El Monte, California, first time celebration
in 2003,2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and now in 2009. This years
event, "Colors of the Spring" known as "Tet" represents
the most celebrated event for all Asian Americans.
The objective of the year 2009 will remain consistent
with that of prior year; to target market young and old
audiences across all racial and cultural barriers.
According to Vietnamese press, there were more than
30,000 people attending in 2007 and 40,000 people in
2008. This year, it is estimated that the celebration
will draw more than 50,000 participants and the live
televise broadcasts will reach over half a million
Vietnamese residing in California.
